Monumental church with big altar dedicated to the Virgin Mary
Interesting place. Nice sorroundings
It has very long hours to visit, it does not close at noon and it is free. Here is the patron saint of Segovia, the Virgin of Our Lady of Fuencisla. On one side of the Sanctuary church there is a room that can be seen through a glass from which you can see the different cloaks that are placed on the Virgin. The large fence that separates the High Altar from the seats of parishioners and visitors is striking.
A 17th Century Sanctuary dedicated to the patron saint of Segovia: The Virgin of La Fuencisla.
Located on the outskirts of Segovia, it is a very beautiful place, with beautiful landscaping and offering sensational views of the upper part of Segovia, especially the Alcazar. . The temple is of great beauty and the welcome of the nuns is remarkable. The Sanctuary is at the foot of the Peñas Grajeras Rocks, which help to create the beauty of the scenery.
A beautiful visit!
It's very nice, they say they were going to throw an innocent lady off a cliff, but it turned out that when she fell she didn't get any scratches.
The Sanctuary of the Virgin of Fuencisla is located on the banks of the Eresma River and at the foot of the Peñas Grajeras, a rock formation on which one of the faces of the Sanctuary rests.
As history tells us, in the 12th century and after the Christian reconquest of these lands, a small image of the Virgin was discovered near a water spring, which would have been hidden since the Muslim invasion in the year 711, almost four hundred years. Today this image is found on the Main Altar of the church.
About this same image of the Virgin of Fuencisla, another legend tells that in the 13th century, a Jew, named Esther, wanted to convert to Christianity but was accused of adultery and condemned to die by falling from the top of the Peñas Grajeras. When she was going to be thrown, tied hand and foot, Esther entrusted herself to the Virgin of Fuencisla and she gently placed her on the ground, emerging unscathed from the fall. After this miracle, Esther decided to change her name to Mary, in honor of the Virgin. Years later, after her death, María was buried in the Old Cathedral of Segovia.
Precisely as a result of this miracle, the construction of a hermitage was decided. The name Fuencisla comes from the Latin fons distillans, meaning a dripping fountain. Today the Virgin of Fuencisla is the patron saint of the city of Segovia.
The Sanctuary has its origin in that small hermitage or shrine built in the 13th century, and which was expanded in Renaissance style during the 15th century. However, seeing that the dimensions of the hermitage were very small, the construction of a new building was ordered at the beginning of the 17th century by the architect Francisco de Mora.
The façade is very sober, just a door with a semicircular arch with padded voussoirs and above it a simple triangular tympanum.
The church has a single floor plan with a splendid rectangular presbytery.
Inside, the magnificent baroque grille from the 18th century made of iron and gold leaf stands out, which closes the presbytery from the rest of the church. Inside the presbytery is the altarpiece of the High Altar, a beautiful baroque work from the 16th century profusely decorated in golden tones. And located in the choir, the baroque organ, from the beginning of the 18th century.
Outside the church, on the left side there is a non-potable water fountain with three spouts that dates back to 1824. Next to this fountain there are some public toilets.
Very close to the Sanctuary is the Fuencisla arch, which is the ancient gate that gave access to the city of Segovia through the San Marcos neighborhood. Next to this arch is the San Lázaro bridge that takes us to the ruins of the old San Lázaro hospital.
In front of the Sanctuary is the Fuencisla park, a beautiful place with a large grove of trees where you can rest on one of the benches. Fuencisla Park is one of the most beautiful places around Segovia. It is a very popular place for Segovians, especially in summer. From the nearby San Marcos meadow you have superb views of the Alcázar.
Admission to the church is free.
You can reach the Sanctuary by car, as there is a parking area very close. You can also walk, going down some stairs that leave very close to the Alcázar (about 15 minutes walk).
